‘Clearly deliberate’: DeSantis cuts Florida’s Hispanic-majority Democratic congressional district

A new redistricting plan by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis aims to eliminate Florida's sole Hispanic-majority Democratic congressional seat in violation of the state's Fair Districts amendments and possibly of the U.S. Constitution. The plan, submitted the day before a special session on redistricting, eliminates four of the eight current Democratic-leaning districts, giving Republicans a 24-to-four advantage over Democrats. Currently, Republicans hold 20 of Florida's 28 seats in the US House of Representatives. The map adds Hispanic voters to the Republican-leaning 11th district and strongly Democratic 10th district, but reduces the Hispanic voting-age population in Soto’s district from 50% to 36%. The House and Senate are scheduled to vote on the map on Wednesday.
