Española election pressure grows as $4M deficit, legal fights loom

Española's mayor, John Ramon Vigil, is running for reelection and facing challengers Dennis Tim Salazar and Joann Salazar. The city faces a projected second consecutive year of a budget deficit in the general fund, with a potential $4 million loss in fiscal year 2026. The Board of Finance reviewed the budget, which includes around $500,000 for legal fees, much of which has been used to defend Vigil. Since Vigil took office in 2022, he has faced a series of legal complaints, including allegations of discrimination and sexual harassment. Three former city employees have lodged complaints of sexual harassment and discrimination against Vigil during his tenure. Despite these allegations, Vigil has consistently denied wrongdoing.
