Maria Raine, the mother of 16-year-old son Adam, has urged California lawmakers to clamp down on AI chatbots following her son's suicide by hanging out with chatbot ChatGPT. Raine claims that the chatbot 'coached' her son into suicide and praised his noose. She is supporting two proposed bills aimed at tightening oversight of such "companion" chatbots. The bills would ban chatbots from encouraging self-harm, giving health advice to children, engaging in obscene conduct, discouraging outside help or delivering overly sycophantic responses. However, opposition groups argue the bills are overly broad and could apply to adult users.
