Fewer patients are visiting HIV treatment centres in Senegal due to a wave of arrests targeting LGBTQ individuals, according to health officials and government data. The crackdown, which began in February, targeted individuals for crimes such as same-sex intercourse and intentional HIV transmission. According to local human rights activists and media reports, 86 people have been arrested, including 18 in a single raid on April 19 in Linguere. The arrests have been accused of "acts against nature" and, in some cases, deliberately giving HIV to others. The National Council for the Fight Against AIDS (CNLS) surveyed 22 HIV/AIDS treatment centres after warning that the arrests could lead to a drop in HIV testing and treatment disruptions. The World Health Organization has warned that the new law will make some people turn away from health services due to criminalization.
