The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is testing local seafood for possible contamination following the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) oil leak. The state health department has recovered several tissue samples of crab, fish, and shrimp for the Louisiana department of Health to test. The leak occurred nearly a month after more than 31,000 gallons of crude oil was released into the Gulf after a hose failure at the LOOP. Local fishermen have been sending photos and video of oily sheen in their waters where they make their livelihoods. Concerns have been raised about the safety of seafood currently being caught, sold, and shipped out by local fishermen while they await official guidance from the state. The Department of Fisheries has stated that if agencies deem a health risk for local seafood, it would be Wildlife & Fisheries that enforce any closures.
