Shane Lee Shahan, a repeat DUI offender, has been sentenced to 19 years to life in state prison for second-degree murder and hit-and-run resulting in death. The incident occurred on Jan. 11, 2023, when Shahan was driving his Chevy Colorado pickup truck westbound on McKinley Avenue approaching First Street in Fresno. His pickup truck collided with a Hyundai, where the passenger, 35-year-old Jesse Espino, was ejected and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Despite denying being under the influence, blood tests revealed that Shahan had both alcohol and marijuana in his system. He had two prior alcohol-related driving convictions, one in 2016 and one in 2017.
