Huntsville City Council weighs utility board consolidation

Huntsville City Council is considering consolidating Huntsville Utilities' three boards into one entity, focusing on governance changes as the utility seeks a new natural gas pipeline for North Alabama and a major update to its grid. The decision could be made by the city council alone, with no involvement from the state level via Public Act 175. The CEO of Huntsville Utility Wes Kelley, who stated that the utility is prioritizing these changes, described the system as "awkward, unclear and complicated" and stated that consolidation would lead to less transparency, higher risk, and a loss of subject matter expertise. Additionally, council members also considered the potential impacts of data centers and the North Alabama Public Energy District's proposed natural pipeline project.
