Since the show's inception in 1952, there have been several notable anchors, including Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel, who both led the program for 15 years. However, Deborah Norville, John Chancellor, and Ann Curry, among others who only lasted a year on the Today show, were both forced to leave the show in 1991 and claimed they were unfairly targeted for pushing out Jane Pauley. Norville joined Today in 1989 as an anchor and later became a co-host in 1990 after Pauley left the program. She returned to television in 1992 as a news correspondent for CBS before being named anchor of Inside Edition in 1995. Since her departure in 2025, she has received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Daytime Emmy Awards and begun hosting a game show The Perfect Line.
