A preliminary study has found that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1) for chronic migraines could be a better treatment for the disease, potentially leading to fewer emergency room visits. The study compared two groups of about 11,000 people each with one of the drugs for another condition, diabetes, and another for another. Researchers found that those on the weight loss drugs were 10% less likely than those on topiramate to visit the ER over the course of a year, and 14% more likely to be hospitalized for any reason. However, the study was merely observational and only shows an association between the GLP-2s and less need for emergency care.
