Former CIA Director, Gen. David Petraeus, has stated that Iran's decision to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz has created a challenge for the U.S. militarily. Despite recent U.N. strikes weakening Iran's navy, Petraeus believes that there are likely some smallish ships left that can still put mines into the water. He also noted that the various types of mines believed to be at Iran's disposal create a challenge in and of themselves. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine stated that the US had made significant progress towards destroying the Iranian navy in the first 10 days of the campaign. Petraeus also commented on the ongoing conflict, predicting it would end on a timeline depending on factors such as oil prices, global sentiment and "missile math".
