The Ohio State Board of Education has named Philip Wagner, superintendent of Johnstown-Monroe Local Schools in the Columbus suburbs, as its next superintendent of public instruction. The role is significantly reduced due to changes made by the legislature in 2023. Wagner, who has worked in Ohio public education for more than 30 years, will replace Superintendent Paul Craft who resigned after helping set up the State Board. The State Board is responsible for performing background checks on potential employees and investigating misconduct, selecting the state's teacher of the year, and approving school district territory transfers.
