Council to offer cash to tenants to downsize

Southampton City Council is planning to offer cash to tenants who live in large council homes to move to smaller ones to provide larger properties for families. The scheme is designed to help alleviate long waits for three and four-bedroom properties. Tenants who opt to downsize can receive £1,000 for the first spare bedroom, £500 for each additional one, and up to £750 for moving costs. The council's cabinet is set to approve the policy.
