The cognitive cost of relying on artificial intelligence (AI) technology is being investigated by researchers to measure. A study by Wuhan University in China found that habitual reliance on AI tools can dull critical thinking, erode memory, and suppress neural activity that learning relies on. The study also found that users who exclusively used ChatGPT for writing showed weaker brain connectivity, lower memory retention, and a fading sense of ownership over their work. The findings suggest that once the brain begins outsourcing its thinking, it cannot easily regain control. This is particularly concerning in countries investing heavily in AI education. Egypt's Minister of Education announced in October 2024 that AI and programming would be core subjects for first-year secondary students across 10 universities.
