Hawk Highway: Why Raptors Reappear in March

March is a popular month for many raptors to migrate across the US, with some species covering up to 2,700 miles in just 13 days. The migration can occur across the country, particularly in certain parks and observatories along the East Coast. These birds use midday thermals to push themselves higher into the sky, reducing energy overall, and certain signs can be used to identify a species of raptor, such as the bird's silhouette and pattern of flight. March is also a great time for birdwatcher as raptors migrate along mountain ridges and coastlines due to favorable weather conditions. However, conditions such as rain, fog, unseasonable snow, or hard opposing wind can hinder progress or bottleneck birds until conditions improve. Some locations are better for this viewing, especially if you're hoping to see multiple raptor species.
