However, by Tuesday, President Donald Trump refuted this idea, stating that he may have forced Israel's hand. The Administration's contradictory statements have left lawmakers, allies, and some allies struggling to discern the legal and strategic basis for the war. The strikes were reportedly undertaken to protect the homeland and U.S. forces, advance national interests, and act in "collective self-defense" of regional allies, including Israel. The administration's actions have led to the deaths of six American service members and hundreds of others across the Middle East.
