Democrats are focusing on changing their positions from their positions in the 2020 midterms and the 2028 presidential election, hoping voters will remember them from the previous year. Potential Democratic candidates have been distancing themselves from some of their positions, including those of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, among others, have both stated that Democrats got the masking and vaccine mandates wrong during the COVID-19 pandemic and would have handled their response differently if he'd been governor. Nearly all potential 2020 presidential candidates have criticized Joe Biden's handling of immigration and the importance of securing the southern border. The shift in tone is also evident in gubernatorial and congressional races, with many senior Democrats avoiding calls to "defund" the police and touting expansion of law enforcement. While moving to the center on issues such as border security, the Democratic Party has moved to the left on others, leading to a shift in its messaging and future. The party has also become increasingly hostile to tech companies and AI amid fears of job losses and concerns over job losses, and has been criticized by tech companies, AI, and anti-Israel policies.
