Grok nonconsensual pornographic deepfakes almost led to an App Store ban

Apple reportedly threatened Grok owner xAI with an App Store ban if the deepfake nude generation issues were not addressed. Despite ongoing issues with the chatbot, the app was never removed. This comes after social media platform X was flooded with AI-generated pornographic images involving non-consenting adults and minors for several days. Despite Elon Musk changing moderation rules on X, even after monetizing the illegal porn, the Grok app did not significantly change. Apple rejected an app update for Grok based on these grounds and shared its reasons for the rejection. After changes and interactions between app review and xAI developers, Apple approved the update. The more powerful the app developer, Apple has previously kicked apps for lesser crimes without much thought.
