L.A. Soundstages Remain One-Third Empty Even as New Facilities Open

Los Angeles soundstages are struggling to lease space to productions, with occupancy at 62% in the first half of 2025, according to data compiled by FilmLA. Despite this, the region continues to add soundstage capacity. The California Legislature has approved a $150 million subsidy to encourage more soundstage production, but this has caused a significant decline in production. L.A. County had about 8.3 million square feet of soundstage space in 2025, up from 8 million the previous year. The U.K. is gaining ground on the global scene, increasing its total to 7.7 million in 2025.
