The cryptocurrency industry is under a severe security crisis, with over $605 million lost in just over 20 days. The latest incident occurred on April 19, when a hacker stole $293 million from Kelp DAO, marking the largest decentralized finance (DeFi) exploit of 2026. This breach brings the total number of attacked crypto businesses and protocols to at least 12 since the beginning of the month. Kelp uses a liquid restaking protocol, where users deposit established cryptocurrencies like Ether into Kelp and receive a "receipt" token called rsETH, which can be used in other financial applications. The attacker targeted the communication system connecting these blockchains, LayerZero, by funding a wallet through Tornado Cash. To prevent further financial damage, Aave, the largest lending platform in DeFi, immediately froze its rsETH markets on both its V3 and V4 platforms. This is the second security incident for Kelp in a year.
