English actor Alec Guinness, known for his roles in the "Star Wars" trilogy, "The Bridge on the River Kwai," and "Lawrence of Arabia," once struggled financially when he first became an actor and could only afford to eat one meal per day. He was accepted into the Fay Compton Studio of Dramatic Art in London at 20 years old with a two-year scholarship which paid him 25 shillings per week, or about $6.25 at the time. Guinness made this amount stretch by eating one meal a day, often baked beans on toast. His stipend would be equivalent to about $151 per week or just over $21 per day, today. The author suggests that while on the set of "Smiley's People," Guinness revealed his favorite foods included Japanese strawberries and quail eggs.
