AlexRenew, the city's wastewater service provider, has completed the 2.2-mile Waterfront Tunnel in 2024 and began accepting test flows of water into the tunnel system on April 20th. The project aims to remediate Alexandria's combined sewer outfalls, which date back to the 1860s, and prevent pollution into waterways. The test flows will be used to assess equipment and prepare for the project's operational deadline, which has been pushed back to July 2026. This is the largest infrastructure project in Alexandria's history and involves a 10 percent rate increase over two years to help fund the project.
