German-Italian actor Mario Adorf, known for his roles in crime thrillers, spaghetti Westerns, and dramas like The Tin Drum, has died at 95 after a short illness. His breakthrough role in The Devil Strikes at Night was in Robert Siodmak's 1957 thriller, and he became a favorite of directors of the New German Cinema movement of the 1960s and '70s. He also played the father of Oscar Matzerath in Volker Schlöndorff’s 1979 film, The Tin Dum, and Winnetou. Adorf was born in Switzerland and raised in Germany by his mother and father-of-one. He won five best actor honors at the German Film Awards and a lifetime achievement prize in 2004.
