The South Carolina Department of Public Health has reported two new measles cases, bringing the statewide total to 993 and approaching the 1,000 mark. The outbreak has spread through unvaccinated populations, largely due to the highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease. The Guilford County Division of Health is expanding access to the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine to protect residents living in high-risk areas and prevent disease from spreading within the community. Health officials will also offer extended hours at several offsite immunization clinics at several community locations designed to make it easier for unvaccined residents to have more access to receiving the vaccine. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services urges people to seek immediate medical treatment if they or their child experience any symptoms of measles.
