Democratic Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is facing expulsion after a seven-hour Ethics Committee hearing over allegations that she diverted millions of dollars in emergency COVID-19 relief funds into her campaign. The hearing, which took place after a rare public hearing, examined 27 counts of alleged violations of House rules. The Department of Justice indicted Cherilus-Mcormick on 15 federal charges in November, which could result in a 53-year prison sentence if found guilty. The charges include conspiracy, theft of government funds, money laundering, illegal campaign contributions, and falsifying tax documents. The Florida Democrat has claimed she is innocent and is under a political witch hunt.
