Senate Faces SAVE America Act Pressure From Trump, House

President Donald Trump and the House's conservative hardliners have called for the Senate to pass voter identification legislation, the SAVE America Act, which would require photo identification and proof of citizenship in federal elections. The president also demanded new additions to the bill, including a ban on most mail-in ballots, transgender surgeries for children, and transgender-identifying male athletes in women’s sports. The Senate has been under pressure from Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Elon Musk to use a “talking filibuster” to block this, which proponents argue could allow Republicans to overcome the 60-vote threshold required to end debate on a bill. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated that the votes simply do not exist to pull this filibuster off.
