Disease and cold temperatures killed nearly 30 sloths at a Florida animal import warehouse in 2024 and 2025. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation inspection report found that 21 sloths imported from Guyana died at the facility called Sanctuary World Imports in December 2024 when temperatures dropped into the 40-to-55 degree Fahrenheit range. The facility purchased space heaters but they malfunctioned, leaving the sloths without heat for at least one night. Peter Bandre, listed as the facility licensee, claimed the animals died of a "cold stun" and that he plans to interview a new veterinarian.
