Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden, a Democrat, won his third term after fending off three challengers in the competitive primary and advancing to the November general election without opposition. McFadden is currently under state investigation for misconduct allegations, facing national scrutiny for immigration disputes, and accused of running a toxic workplace. He secured 34% of the votes, with a 2,717 vote lead ahead of Charlotte police sergeant Ricky Robbins. In District 99, Veleria Levy defeated four-term Rep Nasif Majeed, who was under fire for veto overrides on legislation that rolled back Duke Energy's carbon emissions reduction mandate and upset transgender rights activists. Rodney Sadler has ousted seven-term Representative Carla Cunningham in District 106. Meanwhile, former Gov. Roy Cooper and Michael Whatley won their primaries in the U.S. Senate race, setting the stage for an intense and expensive showdown to replace retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis.
