The article discusses the history of mass immigration into Western nations from the global south, with a focus on understanding developmental psychology and civilization theory. These theories suggest that while immigration from less developed societies requires time and opportunities to integrate, it also presents challenges such as cultural values, patriarchal attitudes, or religious conservatism. Sociologist Georg W. Oesterdiekhoff argues that human societies evolve through distinct stages of psychological and institutional development, such as the formal operational stage of cognitive development. He argues that many arriving immigrants carry the personality structures and cognitive orientations of premodern peoples, having not yet reached this stage of formal operational development. The author also suggests that long periods of executions and social pressures might have contributed to persistent delinquent behavior across European societies. The article concludes that the profound development of culture and institutions cannot be easily replicated by merely issuing residency permits.
