The Irish series, These Sacred Vows, premiered at international TV festival Series Mania this week at the International Panorama program in Lille, is using a murder mystery to tell a larger story that touches on queer identity, community, and the place of religious faith in a secular society. The series, created by John Butler, follows a dead priest being officiated at a wedding in a trashed rented-a-villa on Tenerife, where the mystery will be solved over the next six episodes. The show is a deeply Irish tale about sin and redemption, with the role of the Catholic Church still front and center. Adam John Richardson, an openly gay teacher at a posh Catholic school whose faith is shaken by a violent incident of homophobia, praised the show's portrayal of an out Irish gay man who is a practicing Catholic. Butler hopes to continue using this narrative to further explore themes such as class and gender, sexuality and religion.
