Mississippi State Health Officer, Dan Edney, is reportedly being considered for the director position at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDP) by the Trump administration. A decision on the next permanent director is expected soon, as the acting director's term expires on March 26. Edney has led the Mississippi State Department of Health since August 2022 and previously served as the department's deputy state health officer and chief medical officer. He has served as president of the Mississippi state Medical Association and a board member for the state's Board of Medical Licensure.
