Transgender-specific terms such as "chasers" have become mainstream terms, often referred to cisgender men who fetishize and sexualize trans people solely based on their transness. This has been met with controversy over comedian Chris Overalls' portrayal of himself as a "chaser" seeking to hook up with trans men. The term has been used in numerous online conversations, including those of transmasculine people and trans women. Louis Lindley, a researcher who has written papers on the sexualization of trans and nonbinary people, argues that fetishization involves someone with power reducing another person to one specific component of their identity. He also notes that trans women have also been a focus as they are subject to high rates of violence at the hands of trans men and women.
