White House Requests Massive Defense Budget Increase, Offset By Domestic Spending Cuts

The White House has requested a record-setting $1.5 trillion in defense funding for fiscal year 2027, a 42% increase from current levels. The proposal includes a $445 billion increase in defense spending and $73 billion in cuts to nondefense spending. The funds would be used for munitions production, defense industrial expansion, and continued investment in the Golden Dome missile defense system. However, some programs targeted include federal heating assistance for low-income households, clean energy research, and grants deemed wasteful. Despite resistance from both sides of the aisle, Sen. Susan Collins, the Republican chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, stated that last year's cuts were rejected by Congress.
