Hilliard Police investigation leads to first U.S. conviction under AI deepfake law

James Strahler II, a Columbus man, has been convicted under a new federal law, the Take It Down Act, which makes it illegal to share intimate images or deepfake content without consent. The law was highlighted during a White House press briefing by Karoline Leavitt, who called it “landmark legislation” and noted that Melania Trump played a significant role in supporting its passage. Strahlers pleaded guilty to multiple cybercrimes involving both real and AI-generated explicit material. He used artificial intelligence tools to create realistic fake sexual images and videos of people he knew, both adults and children, and was accused of sending harassing messages to at least six adult female victims from December 2024 to June 2025. Straraler is currently being held at the Franklin County Jail and awaiting sentencing.
