Catamaran could be used to rescue whale stranded off German coast
Published on April 5, 2026.
German authorities are considering using a catamaran to rescue a humpback whale that has been stranded several times off the coast of Germany since March. The animal, which has managed to swim free three times, most recently got stuck off Poel Island in the Bay of Wismar. All rescue attempts were called off on Wednesday, but authorities are now considering lifting the whale off the seabed and transporting it to deeper waters. A health assessment will be conducted on Tuesday to determine if the whale has a chance of survival.
