Vice President Vance, who led a 21-hour day of negotiations with Iran, said that no progress was made towards a peace agreement, which he called "bad news for Iran" as it comes after a 14-day ceasefire in the war. The discussions, which were mediated by Pakistan and held in Islamabad, were reportedly "substantive" but did not reach an agreement. Vance did not specify what offers were made or rejected, but said Iran refused to make an "affirmative commitment" that they would not seek a nuclear weapon or seek tools that would enable them to achieve a nuclear bomb. The talks also covered Iran's frozen assets and other issues beyond that. The negotiations were unsuccessful, with Iran refusing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz until Israel halts strikes on Lebanon, a condition of the truce.
