The first-ever outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) in elephant seals along the California coast has spread to other marine mammals, including sea otters and sea lions. So far, 16 elephant seals have tested positive for the disease, with most believed to have died. One sea otter and a sea lion also both died from avian flu at Año Nuevo State Park, a popular location on the San Mateo Coast. The outbreak has raised concerns that a major outbreak could devastate the Northern California population. However, so far, the impact has been limited to a few small areas on the southern San Francisco Coast. State parks officials have temporarily closed public access to seal viewing areas at the park and cancelled the popular guided elephant seal tours for the rest of the season.
