COMMENTARY: Don’t let AI do your taxes

The privacy issue surrounding AI technology is even more concerning than the math, according to Bruce Abramson, executive director of recruiting and governance at the New College of Florida. Despite AI being a useful learning tool that can provide helpful explanations and information about taxes, he warns that it cannot safely prepare your return. Researchers found that even the best systems in which AI could provide accurate tax returns, they made routine mistakes, including misusing tax tables, incorrectly deciding if someone qualified for common credits and deductions. The privacy issue requires users to provide sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, income statements, bank details, home addresses, dependent information and often documents such as W-2s or 1099s. Tax season is a target for criminals trying to separate people from their money and their data.
