Texas teen's death linked to caffeine in Alani Nu energy drink, family alleges in lawsuit

The family of a 17-year-old Texas cheerleader, Larissa Nicole Rodriguez, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the distributor of Alani Nu, alleging that her death was caused by an enlarged heart due to excessive caffeine. The lawsuit alleges that Alani N. energy drinks, which Rodriguez drank often, had inadequate warnings about the serious cardiac risks they brought. The family is seeking more than $1 million in damages. They are also suing distributors Glazer's Beer and Beverage and Glazer’s Beer & Beverage of Texas. Celsius Inc., the company that owns Alani nu, is not a defendant in the lawsuit. The company's energy drink contains 200 mg of caffeine, the maximum daily maximum amount of caffeine for healthy adults is 400 mg.
