Menendez noted that ICE changed its policy regarding reporting deaths in custody in June, which no longer requires it to be reported to government regulators or public statements following such deaths. Lopez Cornejo, a husband and father who had lived in the US for decades, had been taking medication for seizures and high blood pressure while in detention. He had filed a lawsuit challenging his detention just days before his death, and a federal judge had ordered that he not be transferred during the proceedings.
