Governor, Austin reach agreement over APD ICE policies

The city of Austin has agreed to rework its police department's General Orders to avoid state funding cuts. This comes after Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened to withhold $2.5 million in public safety grants over Austin’s updated policy regarding ICE administrative warrants. The changes, which require officers to notify a supervisor if they find someone with an administrative warrant without other criminal charges, have resulted in greater flexibility for the police department. The agreement allows for the practicality of policing in Austin and avoids creating undue harm for residents who are subject of noncriminal, administrative warrants, and preserving public safety funding.
