Dr. Casey Means, the nominee for the nation's 22nd Surgeon General, has been promoting her Good Energy Living newsletter, which she launched in January 2024. The newsletter features a focus on nutrition and promoting products from companies that paid to sponsor the newsletter. However, it also revealed that at least five of these sponsors sold products that allegedly contain hazardous ingredients, unsafe levels of lead and cadmium, or traces of the forever chemical PFOA. Daily Harvest, the meal kit delivery company, paid Means $12,000 for sponsorship, and Pique, which paid her a hefty $46,000 to sponsor her newsletter. In 2022, Daily Harvest’s French Lentil & Leek Crumbles caused more than 130 people to hospital due to the use of tara flour, an ingredient not recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. In 2023, the Environmental Research Center alleged in a lawsuit that 13 more of Pique's products contain trace elements of forever chemicals. Pique denies these allegations.
