West End lakefront redevelopment advances with legislation

New Orleans' West End Economic Development District legislation has advanced, moving a lakefront redevelopment project decades in progress. The site, which was heavily damaged by Hurricanes Georges and Katrina, has been neglected by both Jefferson Parish Council members and New Orleans City Council member Aimee McCarron. If approved, a board of five people from both Jefferson and Jefferson parishes would work to encourage development of public lakefront properties. The bill also allows the new district to levy a sales tax, subject to voter approval.
