The BMW Art Car Still Sets the Pace

BM is set to present its iconic BMW Art Car at Art Basel Hong Kong 2026, marking the first time the car has made an appearance in Asia. The innovative BMW program, introduced by Robert Rauschenberg 40 years ago, continues to be relevant as it navigates the gap between elite engineering and the public experience. The Art Car program has been influenced by artists such as Julie Mehretu and Jeff Koons, with the choice of artist being made entirely in the hands of experts. BMW's Global Head of Cultural Engagement, Dr. Thomas Girst, shares that many artists chose the opportunity to showcase art outside of museum walls to showcase their work on the street. Since its inception in 1975, BMW has been keen on using the latest tech available to artists in its Art Car series, including foiling, augmented reality, and even apps like Cao Fei's work for her BMW Art car #18.
