Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs captain, underwent successful MCL surgery in New York and is expected to be fit for training camp after a knee-to-knee hit by Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas. The incident occurred a week after GUDas received a five-game suspension for a dirty play, which led to the loss of Matthews for the season. Matthews' agent, Judd Moldaver, called the decision "reckless and ridiculous" and suggested that the NHL's Department of Player Safety should face more punishment. The surgery comes amidst a challenging season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, which is on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since Matthews' debut in the 2016-17 season.
