As Major Crime Falls In Cities, CA Cracks Down On Retail Theft: Newsom

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, has announced that the Organized Retail Crime Task Force has recovered over 33,000 stolen items worth $3.3 million since the start of 2026. This comes as major crime is decreasing in every major city in the state, with a 19.3% drop in homicides and an 8.8% decrease in robberies. The task force was established in 2019 to align local law enforcement, district attorneys, and retailers in response to a rash of flash mob retail thefts. Since then, the state has invested $2.1 billion to combat crime, hire more local police personnel and improve public safety.
