Israel Flores Ortiz, a student at Fairfax High School, was convicted of 13 counts of assault and battery, but was found not guilty on three of the charges and ordered to pay $1,778 in court costs. The charges stem from a series of sexual assaults involving juvenile students at the school over a period of months. The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is investigating whether the school system discriminated on the basis of sex, race, color, or national origin. The case also attracted attention from the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which claim that Flores Ortiz is in the country illegally.
