A New Government Ruling Bans Foreign-Made WiFi Routers—But Your Current Setup Is Probably Safe

The US government has issued a ruling banning new models of all foreign-made internet routers, a significant expansion from the previous ban on only TP-Link models. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) expanded its ban to include all routers manufactured outside the U.S. The decision was prompted by fears that foreign governments could pressure companies to develop backdoors into their routers that allow them to spy on their users. However, existing models can continue to manufacture new units of these existing models. If companies don't start producing these in the US, we'll be stuck with existing routers. The White House also stated that allowing routers produced abroad to dominate the US market creates unacceptable economic, national security, and cybersecurity risks.
