The Loyola University Chicago student newspaper has apologized for using the term "illegal immigrant" as a headline for its story about the charges filed against Jose Medina-Medina, who is accused of murdering its 18-year-old student Sheridan Gorman. The newspaper's editor's note stated that the term does not align with Associated Press style or the values of the newspaper. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that Medina-Madrid was released by the Biden administration after being arrested by the Border Patrol. The paper updated its story to call Medina-Mandridina a "Rogers Park Resident" and deleted the original Instagram post calling him an illegal immigrant.
