Peru Pushes Tourism Beyond Machu Picchu as Limits Bite

Peru's tourism sector is focusing on diversifying beyond Machu Picchu due to chronic ticket shortages at the Inca citadel. Officials are marketing five lesser-known regions to international buyers, redirecting visitor flows away from the overburdened Inca. The strategy is already working in Ica, Cusco, and Amazonas. Despite this, Peru's tourism industry faces challenges including security concerns and potential loss of 5.5 million potential visits between 2020 and 2025 compared to pre-pandemic growth projections. The commercial arm of this push is the Perú Travel Mart 2026, which will convene 190 international tour operators from over 20 countries.
