Trump, GOP leaders rally support for ICE funding plan after assassination attempt

President Donald Trump and Republican leaders in Congress are pushing for passage of a budget blueprint to fund border and immigration enforcement agencies under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This comes after an assassination attempt was thwarted by federal law enforcement officers at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The DHS, which includes the Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Protection, hasn't been funded since February due to a standoff between Republicans and Democrats. The budget reconciliation process, which Republicans used last year, allows them to bypass 60 votes needed to pass legislation in the Senate, allowing them to pass the funding with only Republican support. The blueprint passed the Senate last week with no Democratic support and two Republicans opposed. If passed, it would put certain immigration funding on autopilot for several years and potentially open the door for a larger portion of the federal budget.
